The Golden Visa

The Golden Visa, or investor visa, was a popular residence permit for non-EU citizens who made a significant investment in Spain.

However, as of April 3, 2025, this program has been eliminated, putting an end to new applications. This measure aims to discourage real estate speculation and direct immigration policy towards high-value-added profiles in other areas.

Fortunately, there are equally attractive alternatives for those wishing to reside in Spain without a traditional job offer.

Digital Nomad Visa

This visa is one of the main alternatives for professionals who work remotely. It is aimed at freelancers or employees of foreign companies who wish to reside in Spain.

To obtain it, one must demonstrate sufficient income for the applicant and their family members, as well as a minimum of three months of tenure with the company or contractual relationship.

The initial duration of the visa is one year, extendable to three, and it allows the holder to live and work remotely from anywhere in the country.

Non-Lucrative Residence

This is an ideal option for individuals with passive income, such as retirees or rentiers. The key requirement is to demonstrate financial solvency without the need to work in Spain.

The minimum amount required is 400% of the IPREM (approximately €28,800 annually) for the applicant, plus an additional 100% of the IPREM for each dependent family member (~€7,200 per person). Additionally, one must have private health insurance with full coverage in Spain and no copayments, as well as a criminal record certificate and a medical certificate.

The initial authorization is for one year, and subsequent renewals are valid for two years, allowing for long-term residency after five years.

Social Roots

This permit is designed for foreigners who are in an irregular situation but have established roots in Spain. The main requirements include a continuous stay in the country for at least three years, with absences not exceeding 120 days. The applicant must have no criminal record in Spain and in the countries where they have resided in the last five years.

To apply, it is necessary to have a full-time work contract of at least one year or a social roots report that verifies family ties with a resident in Spain or a social integration report issued by social services.

Family Roots

Family roots are distinguished by not requiring a minimum residence time in Spain or proof of financial means from the applicant. This authorization is granted under exceptional circumstances to those with a direct family relationship with a Spanish citizen or an EU citizen.

The most common situations include being a parent of a minor with Spanish or EU nationality or being the spouse or registered partner of a Spanish citizen. In the case of being a relative of a Spanish citizen, the new card for family members of Spaniards is also a viable option.

Roots for Training

One of the most significant novelties in immigration regulations. What was previously known as roots for training has been renamed to socio-educational roots with important changes. This permit is granted to foreigners in an irregular situation who have resided in Spain for at least two continuous years.

The main requirement is the commitment to enroll in vocational training aimed at employment, such as a Professional Certificate or a Medium-Level Vocational Training. Language or basic computer courses are not valid. The most relevant novelty is that this permit now allows working up to 30 hours per week while undergoing training, a fundamental advantage that did not exist before.

1. The sponsor

The person already residing in Spain initiates the procedure at the Immigration Office. They must have legally resided in Spain for at least one year and have authorization to reside for another year. Sufficient financial means must be demonstrated (a minimum of 150% of the IPREM for the first family member and 50% for each additional family member) and suitable housing must be provided.

2. Apply for a visa at the Spanish Consulate

Once the application is approved by the Immigration Office, the family member in the country of origin must apply for a visa at the Spanish Consulate. The documentation varies depending on the relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.).

Nationality by Residency

The most common way to obtain Spanish nationality is through legal and continuous residency in the country for a specific period.

● General period: ten years for most nationalities.

● Reduced two-year period: for citizens of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, and people of Sephardic origin.

● Reduced one-year period: in special cases such as being married to a Spanish citizen, having been born in Spain, or being the widower or widow of a Spanish citizen.

Applicants must demonstrate good civic conduct and a sufficient degree of integration. This requires passing two exams from the Cervantes Institute: the test of knowledge of the Constitution and Spanish culture (CCSE) and the Spanish language exam (DELE A2). Nationals of Spanish-speaking countries, such as most of Ibero-America, are exempt from the DELE test.
