Nationality and Other Procedures

Nationality by Residency

The most common way to obtain Spanish nationality is through legal and continuous residency in the country for a specific period.

General period: ten years for most nationalities.
Reduced two-year period: for citizens of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, and people of Sephardic origin.
Reduced one-year period: in special cases such as being married to a Spanish citizen, having been born in Spain, or being the widower or widow of a Spanish citizen.

Applicants must demonstrate good civic conduct and a sufficient degree of integration. This requires passing two exams from the Cervantes Institute: the test of knowledge of the Constitution and Spanish culture (CCSE) and the Spanish language exam (DELE A2). Nationals of Spanish-speaking countries, such as most of Ibero-America, are exempt from the DELE test.
